Understanding TDS: What Does Your Water Quality Meter Mean?

Many homeowners purchase a Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) meter to test their drinking water quality at home. While a TDS meter is an excellent tool, misinterpreting the numbers is incredibly common. Knowing what TDS actually measures helps you evaluate your home's water quality with real accuracy.

What Exactly is TDS?

TDS measures the total concentration of dissolved substances in your water, expressed in parts per million (ppm). This includes beneficial minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium, alongside unwanted contaminants like sodium, nitrates, and heavy metals. It measures the total mass of dissolved inorganic solids.

Reading the Numbers Correctly

High tap water TDS (over 300 ppm) usually indicates hard water or high mineral content. However, a low TDS reading doesn't automatically mean water is safe, as a basic meter cannot detect organic chemicals, bacteria, or microplastics. It simply tracks dissolved mineral weight, not overall biological safety.

Evaluating Your RO System

The primary value of a TDS meter is checking your Reverse Osmosis membrane's health. If your tap water is 200 ppm and your RO faucet reads below 20 ppm, your system is running perfectly, proving that the membrane is actively stripping away 90%+ of dissolved materials. It is the ultimate tool for system validation.
